Book Review – Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Lessons in Chemistry: A Novel <— So this one was HUGE pretty much all of last year (constantly in the top 100 of all of Amazon Kindle) and the recommendations I received for it were incredible. My fellow readers were loving it, and it was obviously a hit considering it being front and center for so long.

Connie: Oh, Maryse! How have you not read Lessons in Chemistry yet??? In my opinion, all men should be required to read Lessons in Chemistry and women, too, but men, more so. There is a love story, a painful heartbreak, plenty of humor, and lots of girl struggle and power but it is so much more. READ IT. read more

Book Review – Penpal by Dathan Auerbach

Penpal <— THIS ONE IS TOUTED AS ONE OF THE SCARIEST BOOKS (at least per the scary-book lists online right now), and OMG look at all the awesome reviews. HOLY MOLY. And you know me, I’m all for finding that next super-scary, sleep-with-the-lights-on book… especially right now, on the cusp of Halloween. YES. PLEASE!!!! 😲😬

So I one-clicked it, and saved it for a scary-craving moment and now… I devoured it. Oh and… I went in completely blind, other than that creepy title, and the fact that it was making so many “scary must reads” lists. read more

Book Review – Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

GHOST STORY/HAUNTED HORROR FANS!! GUESS WHAT? I read it. It was good! But it didn’t overwhelm me, and when it comes to haunted houses and horror, I want to be absolutely shocked and freaked out, and whipped into a frenzy!! And this didn’t quite get there for me.

It took me way too long to read despite being so certain that it would be a book I’d devour. I paid that full price for it (I didn’t even wait for it to go on sale), so you know I was rubbing my hands together with creepy-glee. I’m a huge fan of The Amityville Horror (the movie and the book), and this one definitely seemed to have “that feel” going in. I WAS ALL IN!! read more

Book Review – What We Forgot to Bury by Marin Montgomery

What We Forgot to Bury was my Amazon First Reads selection this month and it was a difficult choice between two books on that list (both psych-thrillers) but the other seeming to lean towards a romance/love obsession and I was so in the mood for that. You know I love those!

And surprise surprise, this one actually had a touch of that, too!

Book Review – Her by Britney King

Her: A Psychological Thriller

<—- Oooooh boy what did I just READ???!! That was just MESSED UP!!!!! I don’t even know how to review this. My thoughts are all over the place.

Honestly? I can’t even tell if I like it, or not. I couldn’t put it down, but it drove me crazy (yes… the entire time I was devouring it, I was mad at it). It’ll take me a few days to let this one sink in. Was it over-the-top crazy ridiculous? Was it genius? Was it both?

It’s like one of those movies that you enjoyed and think you liked but kind of hated, and aren’t even sure who you could recommend it to. Your recommendation would come with lots of warnings. Mine will be, this will drive you crazy, make you mad, and you’ll need to suspend disbelief. A LOT. And yet, if you like psych-thrillers like I do, you’ll still be tearing through it to find out what the heck is going on. read more
